Aly Raisman is a two-time Olympic gymnast and team captain known for her strength, leadership, and grace under pressure. A vocal advocate for survivors of abuse, she champions mental health, safety in sport, and empowerment through truth-telling.

The Shift:

Who is a woman who has inspired or mentored you, and what lessons from her influence have stayed with you?

Aly:

My mom always encouraged me to speak my truth and advocate for change. I know that healing is often linked to how trauma is handled, and I’m so fortunate that my mom supported and believed me. She has fiercely defended me since day one and encouraged me to speak up – even when I didn’t know if I had the strength to do so. It helps me to know that my mom will always be in my corner. I knew this when I was competing, and it was so comforting to know that even if I fell or didn’t make it on the podium, I’d have her support. There is so much power in making someone feel validated and supported, I hope I can do this for others.
