Elyse Cohen is the Chief Impact Officer at Rare Beauty and President of the Rare Impact Fund. With 20 years in corporate social responsibility, she previously served as Deputy Director for First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative.

The Shift:

Who are three women that inspire you?

Elyse:

I’ve been fortunate to work for several inspirational women. In many ways, they’ve been some of the biggest gifts of my career – lending their voices and platforms to me in ways I never could have dreamed of.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama

Mrs. Obama always reminded me that my voice – especially as a woman – matters. She embodies the balance of strength and grace, showing that you can be multifaceted, lead with purpose, and still make space for yourself. Her journey has taught me that it’s okay to be “on” when the moment calls for it and to step back when needed, without losing who you are. She proves that you can do it all not by doing everything at once but by being intentional, present, and true to yourself.

Selena Gomez

Selena leads with compassion and authenticity in everything she does. Despite her immense influence, she remains grounded in her humble beginnings, using her platform to create meaningful impact. She reminds me that true influence isn’t just about reach – it’s about the heart behind it. Her genuine commitment to making a difference proves that you can be both kind and vulnerable.

My niece

My 17-year-old niece, Ella, reminds me that inspiration has no age. Her strong-willed nature teaches me the power of standing firm in what I believe, even when it’s easier to be flexible. She holds me accountable, shaping who I am just by knowing she’s always watching me from the sidelines. Watching her grow reminds me to lead with confidence, values, and kindness, knowing that sometimes the greatest lessons come from those younger than us

The Shift:

What is the legacy you hope to leave behind as a changemaker and leader in your industry?

Elyse:

My dream is to be remembered not merely as a leader, but as a catalyst for change – across people and places. I envision a legacy built upon genuine connections, collaboration, and innovation that pushes boundaries and positively influences future generations.
