Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Yazidi genocide survivor, advocates for victims of sexual violence and justice for persecuted communities. Through Nadia’s Initiative, she leads global efforts to rebuild conflict-affected areas and hold perpetrators accountable, turning her personal trauma into a powerful force for human rights and lasting change.

The Shift:

Who is a woman who has inspired or mentored you, and what lessons from her influence have stayed with you?

Nadia:

Many women have inspired me, including the women from my small village of Kocho. Growing up, I was surrounded by strong, resilient women. Although the term “feminism” was not something we were familiar with or identified with, these women embodied its essence. Despite living in a country with some of the most outdated laws, severe inequality, and harsh restrictions on women’s rights, they defied the odds and fought for their rights. Among them was my beloved mother, who raised me and all my siblings as a single mother—a true example of courage and determination.

As I began my activism journey, I had the privilege of meeting many women who have further inspired and shaped my work, including my dear friend Amal Clooney, Diane von Fürstenberg, and many others. Their strength, guidance, and dedication continue to influence my path and remind me of the importance of resilience, advocacy, and the fight for justice.
