The Shift highlights women’s stories through the lens of impact. It hopes to contextualize history and inspire action.

I

Ida Liu is the former Global Head of Citi Private Bank, where she leads wealth management across markets. A trailblazer in finance and advocate for inclusion, she’s known for breaking barriers and championing women in leadership.

The Shift:

Who are three women that inspire you?

Ida:

My Mom, Diana Liu — My greatest inspiration has always been my mother. She was the embodiment of resilience, hard work, and grace—values that have shaped who I am today. As an immigrant who built a new life from the ground up, she showed me the power of perseverance and the importance of always striving for excellence. She taught me that success isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about lifting others up along the way. Her unwavering belief in me gave me the confidence to take risks, break barriers, and lead with purpose. Every challenge I face, I think about the lessons she instilled in me: work hard, stay humble, and always pay it forward.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg — As a trailblazing Supreme Court Justice, RBG reshaped gender equality in the U.S. legal system. Her relentless fight for women’s rights, sharp intellect, and ability to build consensus made her a symbol of perseverance and justice. Her famous words, “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made,” continue to inspire leaders today.

Oprah Winfrey – Rising from a challenging childhood to becoming one of the most influential media moguls in history, Oprah’s impact extends beyond entertainment. She has empowered millions through storytelling, philanthropy, and advocacy, proving that resilience, authenticity, and generosity can change lives on a global scale.

The Shift:

What is one defining moment in your career or life that empowered you to create change, and how has it shaped the path you’re on today?

Ida:

Wealth management isn’t just about numbers-it’s about impact. Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about helping clients not only grow their wealth but also use it as a force for good. Whether it’s empowering female entrepreneurs, advancing sustainable investments, or mentoring the next generation of leaders, I see my role as more than just managing assets-I’m helping people realize their ambitions. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is watching clients transition from success to significance, using their wealth to create lasting legacies. At the end of the day, financial capital is powerful, but human capital is what truly changes the world.

The Shift:

As we look to the future, what is one key change or innovation you believe is essential for advancing equality and empowerment in your field?

Ida:

The future of wealth management is dynamic, inclusive, and deeply personalized. We’re entering an era where technology and human insight must work in tandem-AI and data analytics will enhance decision-making, but the human element of trust and bespoke advice will always be paramount. I envision a world where financial services are more accessible. Where impact investing becomes the norm rather than the exception, and where diverse voices shape the industry. My goal is to continue breaking barriers, fostering innovation, and ensuring that wealth isn’t just preserved but [is] used to create a positive, sustainable impact for generations to come.
